A wildlife outing near Denver can begin with a drive rather than a long hike. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge offers an eleven-mile self-guided Wildlife Drive through a landscape now managed for conservation, with the journey itself providing time to observe.
There is a timely planning detail: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says prescribed burns begin October 19, 2026 and continue for several weeks as weather permits. Check the refuge's current alerts and route guidance before travelling. The notice says smoke may be visible beyond the refuge during operations, which are planned between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
General visiting is free at 6550 Gateway Road in Commerce City. Fall, winter and spring ground hours are sunrise–sunset. The visitor center currently opens Wednesday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., with federal-holiday closures. The agency suggests allowing roughly forty-five minutes to an hour for the drive when conditions permit.
Follow the current map and posted directions, and stay in the vehicle when viewing bison. A particular sighting is never guaranteed. Compare the open prairie, water and other habitats along the approved route, letting observation set the pace. If operations or weather change the plan, use the agency's current advice rather than attempting a closed road or trail.
